The origins of vine-growing in this alpine region are lost in the darkness of prehistory. The Rhaetian wine was known even before the Romans conquered this place, where they learn to use wood barrels as well as the pergola growing system.

The cultivation of the vine has always accompanied the advance of civilization and even today it plays a large part in moulding South Tyrol’s cultural features and landscape. The produce of its vineyards even ceases to find new admirers throughout the world.

These southern slopes of the Alps are blessed with over 1.800 hours of sunshine every year and the earth of the steep or undulating hills s perfect for vine growing, as are the sandy soils in the valley floors along the river’s Etsch (Adige) and Eisack (Isarco).

No wonder a veritable vine paradise has been created here in a relatively limited area of 5000 hectares or 12,000 acres. The variety of wines is nothing short of incredible.
